A melamine resin board usually consists of a wood board (particle board) but is coated with melamine resin. However, there are also pure melamine resin boards without a wooden core. We use these at KETTLER. Pure melamine resin boards for table tennis are between 4 mm and 10 mm thick. As a rule of thumb: the cheaper the board, the lower the thickness and the worse the ball rebound behavior.
However, melamine resin boards are not absolutely perfect. The material is thermally and mechanically very stable and resistant to weather and light. However, due to the so-called shrinkage (volume loss due to drying processes), cracks can occur.
Nevertheless, experts clearly recommend pure melamine resin boards in terms of weather resistance. The material is indeed harder and more durable.
